Inspired by its student musicians whose enthusiasm, talent and sense of community moves them to ever greater achievements, Los Angeles Youth Orchestra is proud to present its April concerts.

Some of these achievements: Los Angeles Youth Orchestra played Carnegie Hall February 2013 to a standing ovation and rave reviews. Coming off that performance, they’ve been invited by the mayors of Venice and Salzberg, on behalf of Music Celebrations International, to perform in the spring of 2015 in the American Celebration of Music in Austria Concert Series as part of the 50th Anniversary Celebration of The Sound of Music motion picture. This will be their first international performance. When asked what it was about the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra that inspired them to play as well as they do, here were a few of the students’ replies:

"LAYO is not only an orchestra, but a community of passionate musicians brought together through an innate desire to muster gorgeous, timeless art with others who share this same love."  Nathan Simantob, Violin, age 17.

"Dr. Steinberg is leading us to understand this glorious music: the focus, nuances, and phrasing, bringing out the beauty of each and every note. To play a piece well, we learn the background and style of its composition, but more importantly, how to incorporate all of these elements into our playing."  Max Hammond, Cello, age 13.

“What makes LAYO unique is our conductor, Dr. Steinberg's, approach to the instruction of orchestral repertoire. Many youth orchestras seem one-dimensional, focusing only on perfect implementation of music. While LAYO is a serious musical environment, Dr. Steinberg's approach is more focused on skill development based on a collaborative effort, which I think is a great method of learning."  Jaya Natarah, Concertmaster, age 17.

Los Angeles Youth Orchestra is an Emeritus Youth Orchestra Partner of the Los Angeles Phiharmonic Orchestra and we've performed at Disney Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, UCLA Schoenberg Hall, Zipper Hall at the Colburn School and more, plus organized and performed with three other LA, California youth orchestras for Youth Orchestra Day to an audience of 1600 and where we were honored to receive the keys to city by the LA City Council.  The orchestra represents over 60 Los Angeles public and private schools, with children ranging in ages from 8 – 18 with a wide array of socio-economic, cultural, racial and religious backgrounds, making it a truly diverse institution. Many of the orchestra’s alumni have gone on to continue their music education with scholarships and awards in such prestigious schools such as Juilliard, Cornell University, Berklee College of Music, UCLA, USC, Harvard, New England Conservatory, and more. The orchestra’s Artistic Director, Russell Steinberg, is a popular composer/educator/LA Phil Upbeat Live lecturer who brings his fervor for music to every performance.

in one movement

This special presentation of works from past Hear Now Festivals focuses on string quartets by outstanding composers who live, work, and create in Los Angeles. Steinberg's String Quartet No. 1was presented in the first festival in 2011; Davis' Wandering was presented in 2012, and Childs'Awakening in 2013. The composers will introduce their works and field questions from the audience.

Childs, Russell and Davis all have active careers in music, working in varied musical genres. Childs is a Grammy-winning, internationally-recognized master of the jazz idiom; Davis is recognized for his film compositions, particularly for The Matrix Trilogy; and Steinberg as a composer-conductor, writer and lecturer.

15800 Zeldins Way
Los Angeles, CA 90049 [map]
Price: Sold out—Live stream available
TEDx is the independent counterpart of TED with a focus on "ideas worth spreading." Each TEDx talk is creatively linked to a theme and maintains the spirit of TED itself: multidisciplinary, focused on the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives, and, ultimately, the world.

The theme for TEDxMilkenHighSchool is "The New Order." It is a concept, fad, and/or trend suggesting that our world is currently undergoing monumental and significant transformations. It is the creative, the innovative, the cutting edge, and the model for the future. Those who acknowledge "The New Order" consider each day as a blank canvas; they realize that now is the time to challenge one's values and question one's moral compass.

MUSIC AND THE END OF TIME by Russell Steinberg

I think of art, at its most significant, as a Distant Early Warning system that can always be relied on to tell the old culture what is beginning to happen to it.
Marshall McLuhan

In our electric age, as we humans “race” in transition to become full cyborgs, the new paradigms emerging in music point the way to what we will both gain and lose as we continue to question what makes us essentially human.
